Purpose of position:

The Application Architect coordinates and facilitates all technical aspects for implementation of an application solution or system. Overall responsibility for the management, governance and delivery of the technical design artifacts for a given technology initiative. Activities typical of this position include coordinating and designing the technology architecture (coordinating across all domains) of an IT project, participate in the recommendations and selection of software and implementation partners, hardware/software sizing, integration and interface design and/or coordination, vendor configuration management and deployment planning, etc. This position will work with various Divisions/Groups within Grant Thornton IT including Enterprise Data Center, IT Operations, Database Administration, Data Analysis and Integration, Application Development, Project Management Office, Quality Assurance and Technology Strategy and Architecture.

This position is a key member of the Solution Delivery division in the IT department and reports directly to the Manager of Application Development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Provides technical leadership for information technology efforts, including enterprise application projects.

· Understand business needs and researches/reviews a broad range of technologies to identify the appropriate solution without bias.

· Defines technical evaluation criteria for product and technology selections and determines technical approaches to ensure all architectural solutions result in a coherent systems design.

· Consults with business partners and the IT Strategy and Architecture team to ensure projects align with business plans and architectural directions.

· Creates project, application architecture, and technical design deliverables that are consistent with architecture principles, standards, methodologies, and best practices.

· Coordinates and overall responsibility for delivery and integration of corresponding architecture and design deliverables, including, data, infrastructure, security, DR/BC, enterprise, et al, as needed.

· Defining and validating non–functional (technical) requirements, and aligning business requirements to what will be delivered through a technical design.

· Provides expertise and inputs into project scoping documents including estimates and design deliverables, when needed.

· Identifies, with Project Management, the workstreams and assignments for the technology components of an IT project.

· Leads project teams as overall technical SME in architecting, designing, and building robust solutions in compliance with enterprise architecture standards and defined business/functional requirements.

· Responsible for the delivery of concise and accurate systems documentation, including low-level technical and non-functional requirements.

· Leads or participates in vendor selection coordination, hardware/software sizing, integration and interface design and/or coordination, vendor configuration management and deployment planning

· Acts as a liaison for the technical team to the project leadership team and management.

· Perform architectural and code strategies / pattern reviews to ensure adherence to GT coding standards, unit test strategy, build / deployment strategy and provide technical mentoring.

· Drives the transition from “active” project to operational support.

· Respond proactively to training, technical support, and customer service needs.

· Participate in and occasionally lead special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

· A bachelor's degree and minimum seven years of information technology experience with at least three years of application/solution architecture experience.

· Ability to understand a business problem and look at a broad range of technologies to identify the appropriate solution.

· Excellent communication, presentation, influencing, and reasoning skills to earn support of business leaders, technology leaders, colleagues, and vendor representatives.

· Solid Design/Architecture experience in IT.

· Fluent in the technology dimensions of data, application and technology infrastructure.

· Drive, hone, govern and enforce GT IT standards and best practices.

· Experience of different project lifecycle approaches (e.g., Waterfall, Iterative, Agile) and change management best practices

· Demonstrated technical leadership experience.

· Proven experience with Microsoft technologies including SharePoint, .Net and SQL Server database environment and system / data integration.

· Ability to drive through change in a complex and challenging environment.

· Ability to adapt and react quickly to changing priorities and a strong attention to detail.

· Implementation experience of large-scale systems across a number of business functions.

· Strong negotiation skills.

· Effective written and oral communication skills

· Project management skills including planning and requirements gathering

· Ability to work both independently or as a member of a collaborative application development team and across the IT organization.
