State and Local Tax Managing Director

Position Summary:

Grant Thornton’s core business is audit, tax and advisory services. In short, we strive for a keen understanding of the client’s business in order to provide insightful and sound operational advice, recommend process improvement strategies, and offer suggestions to manage risk. Grant Thornton’s responsive, partner-led Tax service teams help dynamic companies navigate complexity and grow with insightful, practical tax advice. In addition to tax professionals in our offices across the United States, our Washington National Tax Office provides deep technical knowledge and responsive support in local, state, federal and international tax. Our tax services include: compliance, human capital services, federal tax services, international tax services, state and local tax services, private wealth services, tax reporting and advisory, partnership taxation, not-for-profit tax, and mergers & acquisition tax services.

The State and Local Tax Managing Director interacts with national and regional leadership to drive local SALT initiatives that feed into broader regional and national goals for an International Accounting Firm. The SALT MD has an assigned client base in various industries and is responsible for the delivery of a full range of SALT services. In addition, the SALT MD is responsible for marketing, selling, designing and implementing SALT planning strategies for clients in various industries. The SALT MD maintains close interaction with clients to provide planning, consulting, and compliance expertise and is responsible for client management and practice and people development of local SALT professionals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and maintain strong relationships with business owners and CEO's of current and potential clients.
Effectively manage existing client relationships to enhance client satisfaction.
Identify and capitalize on opportunities to sell services to existing and potential clients.
Effectively manage the fundamentals (i.e., realization, utilization, leverage, accounts receivable, expenses)
Successfully integrate industry initiatives with local office strategy
Serve as an effective leader of the SALT tax practice.
Engage in productive interaction and teaming with office, regional, and national leadership.
Use knowledge of the client, competition, market, product, or service to expand SALT services to current clients. Serve as business adviser to clients.
Utilize the appropriate firm resources to develop and close sales opportunities that fit within the firm strategy.
Promptly identify problems related to financial performance and implement effective solutions to address financial performance problems.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or an MS in Taxation.
CPA, JD, or LLM in Taxation.
At least ten years of progressive state and local tax consulting/compliance experience in public accounting or a combination of corporate and public accounting experience.
At least ten years of progressive audit experience in public accounting or equivalent.
Experience in a medium- to large-sized public, regional, or national accounting firm.
Demonstrated track record of effective leadership. Majority of experience should be developing business with domestic corporate clients in the middle market.
Ability to manage and develop staff in a highly interactive team environment and manage multiple engagements and competing priorities.

Additional Information:

Ability to work additional hours as needed and travel to various client sites.
